The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified Trevor M. Young as the 37-year-old man who was struck and killed by an oncoming train in Monroe on Tuesday, Jan. 16. Young’s death is being classified as an accident.
Monroe Police responded shortly after the collision, which occurred around 6 a.m. Jan. 16, and caused the intersection of State Route 2 and East Main Street to be shut down for several hours.
The train conductor told law enforcement he had spotted the Index man laying between the rails, and immediately engaged the emergency brake, according to an MPD news release. Young reportedly tried to get up and move out of the way, but was not quick enough to avoid being struck by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe train.
A news release states officers found a backpack a short distance west of the trestle, and then located Young’s body in a log jam in Woods Creek below the tracks just before 8:30 a.m. The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office’s dive team responded to assist MPD with recovering Young’s body.
Another man was killed a few miles away from the spot last spring, when he jumped in front of a BNSF freight train hauling vehicles.
A number of trains were delayed that day as a result, and BNSF was to conduct an investigation.
