Sheriff's office investigating human remains near State Route 522

Cleanup crew made discovery between Maltby, Monroe

Human remains were found between Maltby and Monroe near State Route 522 on Wednesday afternoon.

Snohomish County Sheriff's detectives from the Major Crimes and Collision Investigation Units headed to the intersection of Downes and Fales roads around 3 p.m., according to an agency news release. A suitcase and blanket were also discovered at the scene.

The sheriff’s office reports a crew had been cleaning litter from the side of the road when they came upon the remains. The gender and age of the person is unknown.

The Snohomish County Medical Examiner also responded, and will determine the person's identity and cause and manner of their death, according to the release. The agency will release its findings once the investigation concludes.

Information will be provided as it becomes available, according to the sheriff's office.
