Monroe resident Charlie Mayes has watched her six-year-old son Gavin go through a lot.
Diagnosed with leukemia on March 15, 2013, at the age of 3, Gavin has endured six cycles of chemotherapy, numerous hospitalizations and 16 separate blood transfusions during the course of his treatment. Currently in the sixth phase of an intensive chemotherapy regimen, Gavin will remain on chemotherapy drugs until May of 2016.
Each day, he takes an oral dose, with a larger dose required every Tuesday. Every 12 weeks, Gavin has to visit the hospital for a more significant dose, which is introduced into his spinal fluid via a lumbar puncture.
Blood donors, said Charlie, saved Gavin's life.
"To give back to the community for helping support our family, and to thank the blood donors for saving Gavin's life, we decided to have a blood drive,GÇ¥ Charlie said. "After seeing how easy it was to host, to get donors and help save other lives, we've kept having blood drives.GÇ¥
The Mayes' blood drive will take place from noon to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, at Cascade Community Church (14377 167th Ave. S.E.) in Monroe.
