First MHS athlete of the year signs on to college program

Monroe High School senior Hannah Schumacher has signed on to the gymnastics team at Baylor University in Texas, making her the first MHS student to sign to a college athletics program this year.

They have a really good nursing program and they have the sport I want to do which is acrobatics and tumbling,GÇ¥ said Schumacher in a Monroe School District news release.

The daughter of John and Christine Schumacher, Hannah became involved in gymnastics when she was five, moving to competitive cheer in her freshman year. She said she will continue cheering at Baylor.

Schumacher's plans to pursue a nursing degree were partly influenced by her personal life, according to the school district.

"My brother was in a coma for 10 years and I basically lived in the hospital with him for two years,GÇ¥ she said. "The good nurses changed your life in some way, whether it was little or big. I wanted to be one.GÇ¥
