Two MHS athletes sign Letters of Intent to play college sports

Recently, Monroe High School (MHS) joined other high schools across the country in celebrating National Letter of Intent Day, where student athletes indicate their intention to play collegiate athletics for their chosen school. This year, two MHS athletes signed letters of intent.

Sydney Day, daughter of Steve and Donna Day, intends to play soccer for Arizona State University (ASU) while she majors in criminal justice and criminology. She plans to continue into the field of criminal psychology after college.-á

ASU invited Day to its soccer ID camp earlier in the year, where coaches reviewed her skills and put her through drills with the other athletes. Day credits the MHS soccer program for preparing her for college athletics. "We had soccer practice every day, which is how ASU is going to be,GÇ¥ she said.-á

Andrew Zimmerman, son of Robert and Rita Zimmerman, intends to play football for Washington State University (WSU) in the fall. He plans on studying either sports management or broadcast journalism, but he is most excited about being a part of the team at WSU.

"I'm not excited to be away from home, but I'm excited to start my own life and my own path,GÇ¥ he said.-á

Zimmerman spent four years in the football program at MHS before being injured in the fourth game of the season his senior year. "I fell on my knee wrong, and I tore my MCL and had to have surgery,GÇ¥ he explained.-á

He had been talking to several schools before he got hurt, but those contacts soon disappeared. Zimmerman was scared he'd lost his chance, but Coach Brett Jay stepped up to help.-á

"After the season, he contacted WSU, and we came to the decision I could play there,GÇ¥ Zimmermann said. "I'm stoked. I'm super excited to work under Coach Leach and be a Cougar.GÇ¥

Both Day and Zimmerman signed their letters of intent with family and friends in the MHS Performing Arts Center. They join state championship swimmer Cathryn Armstrong, who signed with Michigan State University earlier this year.
