The Great Northern mainline was completed Jan. 6, 1893. This first Monroe depot was located about 200 feet west of Lewis Street on the north side of the tracks. It was replaced in 1909 by a new depot built about a block east of the old one near Ferry Street. That depot was razed and replaced with a modular unit in 1972. The station closed completely in 1976. The Great Northern Railway became Burlington Northern in 1970 after a merger with Northern Pacific. The Milwaukee line discontinued service through Monroe in 1973. Great Northern also had a branch line south through Cherry Valley to Tolt, now Carnation. It nearly paralleled the route of SR 203. Based on dates of similar photos, this one is from March, 1900.
