Flashback: Lewis Street, looking north

This photo was taken from the Lewis Street intersection with Main Street in approximately 1921.
In mid-May 1911, the Milwaukee Railroad track crossed Monroe's town limits over the trestle leading to Holmquist Hill and over the Great Northern Mainline. The line ran from Everett to Cedar Falls, ID.
This photo shows the Milwaukee depot on North Lewis Street at the foot of what old-timers call Milwaukee Hill, now Chain Lake Road. The depot was moved to its present site just east of Lewis Street in about 1947 so that street improvements could take place. The depot was on the south side of the Milwaukee's own tracks which paralleled the Great Northern tracks south of them. The Mercantile Co. and OK Market are at the northwest corner of the intersection. The top of IOOF Hall can be seen behind to the left.
