Flashback: Monroe Golf and Country Club Clubhouse

This photograph probably dates back to the 1950s. Built by H.C. Tooker, the golf course opened June 17, 1931 on Old Owen Road, a couple of miles east of downtown Monroe. In May, 1937, Leonard and Bess Schrag assumed ownership and ran the course well into their retirement years. Dances were often held on the second floor of the clubhouse until about 1961, when the Schrags became too busy to continue hosting. The clubhouse, originally a barn, was built in 1923.
The Monroe Golf Course closed in the 1990s, and is now Tall Firs Disc Golf Course. Monroe Historical Society Photo 107. If you know more about this picture, please contact the Monroe Historical Society at (360) 217-7223.
