Located on the southeast corner of Hill and Kelsey Streets, the cornerstone of Monroe Union High School was laid Sept. 13, 1910, and the school was dedicated on Sept. 1, 1911, with the first day of school Sept. 5, 1911. The contract for construction was $42,467. This view from 1924 looks northwest, showing the front and east side of the school. The two-story windows in the back wing mark the location of the library and study hall. The gymnasium was underneath. Later a gymnasium annex was added to the east side and the old gym was converted to the home economics classroom. The building was condemned after the spring 1965 earthquake and torn down that summer; although this original part of the school proved much harder to demolish than the later gym annex.
