This photo of shop class in the machinery classroom at Monroe Union High School was taken in approximately 1914.
A two-year manual arts class was offered at the new high school as soon as the shop teacher arrived, a month after the school opened in the fall of 1911. The first class had to build their own work tables first and then went on to construct two balconies in the gymnasium on the second and third floors of the north wing. The following year, a 30x80 foot shop building with two classrooms was built east of the high school, and in 1914 a 24x30-foot addition was made to the shop building. This is a halftone print from the 1915 Sahalie, the school yearbook, which is in the collection of the Monroe Historical Society.
