Flashback: Washout of first Milwaukee Railroad Bridge

This photo was taken looking south from the Buck Island side of the Skykomish River, with High Rock at upper left.
The first Milwaukee Railroad Bridge washed out in a 1921 flood.
River flooding proved a recurring challenge to the railroads in the area and ultimately caused the Milwaukee Railroad to abandon its branch line between Monroe and Everett, and move this bridge and trestle across the Skykomish River at Buck Island, about 200 feet downstream, so as to merge with the Great Northern Mainline at Monroe in 1939.
