Freedom Is a Gift/A Poem by Maleah Haverly, Age 13

Maleah Haverly, a freshman at Monroe High School, entered and won a Veterans' Day poem contest at the high school. This, the winning poem, is to be read at the MHS Veterans' Day assembly.
Freedom is not something that is bought.
Freedom is not something that is earned.
Freedom ironically is not free.
Freedom is something that is fought for.
Freedom is courageous men, saying goodbye,
possibly for the last time.
Freedom is the lives of heroes being laid down for strangers,
that they might be free.
Freedom is the crimson stripes of our soldiers
resembling the ones on our flag.
Freedom is the images that haunt our heroes,
images that bring forth tears in their tortured eyes
These heroes were never forced to lay their lives
at the feet of a grim-reaper's door.
That's the beauty of it;
They went willingly
because that's what freedom meant to them;
because their soul longs to protect.
Freedom, my friend, is not deserved.
Freedom is a result of sacrifice.
Freedom is a gift.
