It was a lovely night in Monroe. Behind us, Lake Tye shone gold with the setting sun, also illuminating the beer garden that welcomed us with its white picket fence.
In front of us, little children jumped and danced and bounced beach balls, sometimes off the heads of unsuspecting (and unperturbed) strangers.
And in front of those little children played a band called The Hitmen. A well-seasoned band; no slouches were they. A little Marvin Gaye, some Sly and the Family Stone and Stevie Wonder, even a hint of new Seattle phenomenon Macklemore.
I was among, perhaps, 100 people at the park enjoying this free concert, a gift to us from the Snohomish Artist Guild, the City of Monroe and local businesses and organizations.
What were you doing last Thursday night between 7 and 9 p.m.?
Did you know about the concert series offering a different group of talented performers each Thursday, all the way through August 8? Maybe you had heard, but just didn't realize how cool an event it might be.
I can't really think of another thing that I would rather have been doing than sitting on a blanket in the park with a bunch of fine folk, listening to tunes and soaking in the atmosphere.
There is so much to do around here in the summer for little to no cost! And this concert series exemplifies the fun to be had.
Keep an eye on the Monitor; we're doing our level best to let you know what's out there, from festivals in Index and picnics in Skykomish to concerts in Monroe.
I'm not writing this because I feel any particular need to get a bigger crowd for the band or the city or the guild; I just want people to have fun and utilize all of the opportunities for a great time that the Valley has to offer. And the selfish part of me thinks that the more people who show up at events like this, the more organizers will want to bring us future events.
So, that being said, do you like the Who? Led Zeppelin? Pink Floyd? Then join me this Thursday at 7 p.m. for classic rock cover band the Black Vinyl Allstars at Lake Tye!
I can't promise you a good time, but I can promise that all the elements are there to have one. The rest is up to you!
