Washington State University student Mario Vega will present his research project on former Monroe resident and Japanese-American Tom Haji during the Monroe Historical Society’s annual membership meeting and quarterly presentation on Wednesday, March 14.
Haji lived in Monroe during the Great Depression, and his family was interned at Tule Lake, California, after Pearl Harbor, according to the historical society. He enlisted after that, and died in Italy in 1945; he was a member of the 442nd Combat Regiment. Haji received a posthumous diploma from Monroe High School in 2009.
A short business meeting at 6 p.m. will precede Vega’s presentation at the Monroe Library, 1070 Village Way. The event is free and open for all ages.
