Hoover to retire from Monroe School District

Monroe Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Ken Hoover has announced his retirement on June 30, 2015. Hired in 2006, Hoover is completing his ninth year in that role and nearly 30 years in public education. He also served nine additional years in public service.
"As I reflect on the progress these past nine years I am inspired and hopeful,GÇ¥ Hoover said. He said he is inspired by his colleagues in the schools working every day to improve and by the achievements and accomplishments of local students.
Hoover said he was hopeful for even greater achievement because of the strong community support of local schools and the leadership of the School Board.
School Board members accepted his intent to retire at their recent regularly scheduled meeting. Work will begin soon on the process to select the new school leader. Community members can expect to hear more about how the community can be involved in the process.
Hoover said he is looking forward to the next eight months and expects to "go out under full steam.GÇ¥
"Dr. Hoover has more than achieved the goals we set out for him during his hiring process,GÇ¥ said Jim Scott, the only current school board member who served at the time Hoover was selected.
This year student scores on state tests beat the state average in 16 out of 21 areas GÇô an increase over the prior year. New programs like the Dual Language program at Frank Wagner Elementary School and Maltby Elementary School's Montessori program were initiated. Sky Valley Education Center (SVEC) moved to the campus on Short Columbia Street allowing those students greater opportunities. The new campus allowed last year's STEM Academy to launch at SVEC with student learning accomplished through the lens of science, technology, engineering and math. That academy started serving middle schoolers (grades 6-8) and was expanded this year to serve high school freshmen.
In addition, Hoover implemented a community budget process inviting community members each year to review 100% of the schools' operating budget through the Budget Review Committee. The suggestions and advice of that committee drive the process the School Board uses to formulate each year's operating budget for the school system. In February, under his leadership, the community approved a 6-year Technology Levy. Community support for replacing roofs and HVAC in 2010 was also accomplished under Hoover's leadership.
