Joyce Acker Tingley November 25, 1932 - June 28, 2017

Joyce Acker Tingley, age 84 of Ballard Washington, died peacefully in her home on June 28, 2017 surrounded by her children. Joyce was born Joyce Anne McCarty on November 25, 1932 in Sultan Washington. She spent most of her childhood in Monroe, and graduated from Snohomish High School in 1951. At an early age Joyce discovered a passion for music that would last a lifetime. She performed with the Lake Forest Park Presbyterian Church Choir, the Choir of the Sound and participated in musical theater productions at the Bothell Senior Center. Singing brought joy and happiness both to her and those fortunate enough to hear her, this was never truer than when she sang her signature song Skylark.

On April 28th, 1951, Joyce married Bill Acker of Index WA. They raised three children and eventually settled in the town of Lake Forest Park. In 1969 Joyce began a career in early childhood and preschool education through Shoreline Community College. She taught for 27 years, imparting her love of learning and sense of community to generations of children and parents in Shoreline. In 1996 she retired, earning an accommodation from the Governor for her years of service to the people of Washington State. In 1995, at age 63, Joyce fulfilled her lifelong dream and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Antioch University. After retirement from teaching Joyce operated the Richmond Beach post office, becoming a fixture of the community. She was an active volunteer at the Assistance League of Bellingham, and, in her later years, remained active within her community in Ballard.

Joyce is survived by her daughter, Lori Heiberg, and her husband Tim of Lincoln City, Oregon, her son Tim Acker and his wife, Bev, of Stanwood, Washington and her son, Andy Acker and his partner JR of Honolulu, Hawaii, grandchildren Adam, Emily, Ally, Katy, Tim and Josh and great-grandchildren Ty, Laina and Violet.

Please join the family at a remembrance service and celebration of Joyce’s life on Saturday August 5 at 3:00 PM at the Innis Arden Clubhouse located at 1430 N.W. 188th Shoreline, WA.  In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made to the Assistance League of Bellingham.
