May 16, Elizabeth Lang-Knox GÇôHutchins of Monroe celebrated her 100th birthday in Monroe at St Mary of the Valley Catholic Church with approximately 100 family and friends.
This year also marks Elizabeth's 80th year in Monroe. She moved from North Dakota to Monroe with her husband, Clyde Knox in 1934, during the nation's Great Depression and the Dust Bowl in the mid-west.
Several family members traveled significant distances to attend Elizabeth's 100th birthday celebration. Franz and Elisabeth Sattler came from Breitenbrunn, Austria (the town Elizabeth's parents immigrated from in 1908), her niece Deanna Marriott-Burns and her husband Dan came from Yuma, AZ; her niece Shirley Minor-Hinzmann and her husband Harlan came from Blooming Prairie, Minn., a friend, Sister Rosea Brown came from Mankato, Minn., step-daughter Nancy Hutchins-Lawson came from Bay Point, CAlif., and granddaughter, Leanne Reynolds-McGahan came from Nikiski, Alaska.
Elizabeth's sister and only living sibling, Helen Lang-Marriott, age 89 of Sequim was also in attendance. Helen is also a previous long-time resident of Monroe.
Elizabeth danced the Vienna Waltz with Franz Sattler. George Lang, Jr., a nephew from Leavenworth, gave Elizabeth a champagne toast; and James Marriott, a nephew from Sequim, presented her birthday cake. -áGeorge and James, as well as Deanna Burns and Nancy Lawson, are all previous Monroe residents.
Elizabeth attributes her long life to having a cup of black coffee for breakfast every day, having a positive outlook on life, surrounding herself with loving family and good friends, and Saturday night barn dances.
