Fire District 7 emergency responders rescued a man found down an embankment after he walked away from his car that had collided with a power pole.

Crews were dispatched at 3:09 a.m. Saturday, May 13, to the 20500 block of Old Owen Road in northeast Monroe. All that was found was a black sedan, said Fire District 7 public information officer Heather Chadwick.

The pole had been sheared off, and wires were strewn across the roadway, according to a fire district news release. Neighbors said they saw someone walk away from the crash.

The man, who is in his 30s, was located 100 feet down a nearby hill, where responders treated him.

Chadwick said Fire District 7 crews then had to perform a low-angle rescue to pull the man up the embankment. In low-angle rescues, ropes are still used, but the grade is less steep than a high-angle rescue, Chadwick said. The process is also generally less challenging.

Once he was pulled to safety, the man was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center.

The Snohomish County Sheriff's Office is investigating the cause of the accident, Chadwick said. It is unknown if drugs and/or alcohol were involved, she said.
