The Sultan-Monroe Masonic Lodge No. 160 awarded its fourth bicycle on Friday, May 28, in conjunction with its annual Bikes for Books literacy campaign.
The Masonic Bikes for Books campaign is a nationwide initiative aimed at enhancing community literacy by encouraging kids to read more. The campaign is supported by the Sultan Library, which has organized a reading contest for the past several years to facilitate the giveaway. This year, the contest was available to Sultan School District students from kindergarten through eighth grade, who were asked to submit a written entry telling the library about a book they read in April.
The submission could be in essay form or an artistic sketch depicting their favorite scene from the book. The four winners were drawn randomly from the pool of entries.
On Monday, May 23, bicycles were awarded to Alfonso Saldana, Joesiah Day and Kiana Kypreos during a surprise awards ceremony at the Sultan Library. In addition to the bikes, which were funded by the Masons, the students received new helmets and bike locks, courtesy of Snohomish County Fire District No. 5 and the Friends of the Sultan Library, respectively.-á
The fourth bicycle was awarded to third-grade Sultan Elementary School student Elianna Emmons, 9, during a schoolwide assembly. Emmons read "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules,GÇ¥ the tale of a seventh-grade boy named Greg Heffley, who is constantly being tormented and pranked by his older brother, Rodrick.
"He's a terrible brother,GÇ¥ Emmons said.
In the story, Rodrick picks Greg up from swim practice and forces him to ride in the back of his van among all his band equipment. There isn't even a seat in the back, explained Emmons, and Rodrick made sure the ride was as uncomfortable as he could possibly make it.
"And he goes extra fast on a bump, so it would be more terrifying for his brother,GÇ¥ Emmons said.
For the Bikes for Books contest, Emmons decided to draw a picture of Greg being tormented by Rodrick.
Emmons said that she loves her new bike and is grateful to the Masons for giving it to her.
"I love it,GÇ¥ Emmons said. "Thank you. It's a really cool bike.GÇ¥
