A Monroe man is in jail on a quarter-million-dollar bail after police report that they found him at a Mill Creek storage unit in which they also found 46 guns, 30 of which were reported stolen.
Police say that Ricky Shanahan, 34, a felon, tried to run when police arrived at the storage unit April 29, acting on information that there might be drug activity at that unit.
Police captured the man and searched the storage unit, turning up 46 weapons which were in plain sight. They ran checks on them, and found that 31 of the guns had been reported stolen.
The man was also reportedly found with heroin.
He has a criminal history going back to conviction on two felony drug dealing charges in 2003 that led to a short jail term and two years of probation.
He was later sentenced to 15 months in prison on a methamphetamine charge and a gun possession charge in 2005.
He was arrested a couple of times after his release, apparently for violation of the terms of his supervision.
More recently, on Feb. 18, he was picked up in Everett for two counts of illegal possession of firearms and a count of drug possession.
On March 29, the Bothell Police Department arrested him for domestic violence and two days later on violation of a no-contact order.
When he was arrested April 29, he was initially held on $100,000 bail, but that amount was raised to $250,000.
He is currently being held on the domestic violence and drug possession charges, as well as 46 counts of unlawful possession of a firearm and 31 counts of possession of a stolen firearm.
Also, in an unrelated case, two Monroe men were indicted May 7 in Federal Court on suspicion of trafficking in stolen guns.
Matthew Elshaug and Casey Yount have been indicted in relation to a Nov. 17, 2013 break-in at the Snohomish Fred Meyer in which Elshaug is believed to have stolen 29 firearms from the store's inventory.
According to the indictment, Elshaug, of Monroe, broke in and then used a crowbar to smash a glass case holding the guns. He then stole two backpacks and loaded the guns into them, including a number of 9 mm and .45 caliber pistols.
Elshaug took the guns home, the feds believe, and immediately he and Casey Yount, also of Monroe, agreed to trade nine of the guns for cash and drugs to a man in Everett, who gave them $850 in cash and a couple grams each of meth and heroin.
Shortly thereafter, the Everett man sold all nine guns to two separate people.
In the meantime, Yount and Elshaug allegedly took about 10 more guns to a buyer in Marysville, who gave them several hundred dollars and some meth. That buyer then sold the guns to someone else.
Elshaug then gave Yount $200 for his help.
Elshaug already had a criminal history; he'd been convicted in 2008 on a number of burglary, stolen vehicle possession and firearms charges.
Yount, too, has a background; he was convicted of theft in 2007 and of a drug charge in 2008.
If convicted, the two men could face years in federal prison.
