Monroe gets a new private high school with 21st Century education model

By Holly Glen Gearhart
Next fall will bring a new high school option to Monroe, and with it, a new concept of high school education.
Registration is now open for the coming 2013-14 school year for Monroe Christian High School. The high school grew out of Monroe Christian School, as they saw a need for moving on to secondary education. Utilizing the internet and community resources, the fledgling school will have a relatively small number of attendees in its inaugural year.
"Ideally we would like to open with an inaugural class of 12-15 freshmen/sophomores," according to Monroe Christian School's Henry Algera," via email last week. "We would like to intentionally keep the teacher-student ratio low, as that can help lead to some deeper learning opportunities for our students. Ultimately we are projecting an overall high school enrollment of 50-60 students once we are offering all four years of classes.GÇ¥
According to their website, tuition is $7,800, with an upfront, non-refundable registration fee of $500, due at the time of enrollment. There is a payment schedule available through "Smart TuitionGÇ¥ at http://www.smarttuition.com but there are no plans financial aid or scholarships at this time.
"Our longer-term budget projections include financial aid in future years,GÇ¥ said Algera. Students are required to have a personal laptop computer at the time of enrollment and the school encourages students to consider Google's Chrome book laptop, with a starting price of $249.
The teaching style of the school uniquely addresses not only the state requirements for secondary education, it also consists of learning labs, learning seminars and learning designed for the individual student's strengths and interests.
The school offers a new approach to classes; some will be on campus, some online and some designed to engage the student to serve community needs. According to the website, the school is focused on engaging students to direct their learning, serve their community and empower the student to "...change the world for Jesus Christ.GÇ¥
