A Monroe-area man was booked into the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of attempted first-degree murder on July 26 for allegedly shooting at a Sultan man after a confrontation in the Sultan man's driveway.
The victim called Snohomish County Sheriff's office from his residence on Mann Road in Sultan to report the assault. The suspect, a 70-year-old man named Paul Hackney, was known to the victim, and was apprehended shortly after the incident when he was identified and stopped by police at 311th Avenue S.E. and U.S. 2. The suspect had a 12-gauge pump shotgun in plain view on the front passenger seat, along with cans of beer and Mike's Hard Mango Punch, both full and empty. His dog was in the backseat.
The victim called police shortly after 11 p.m. to report the incident. He stated in the police affidavit that Hackney was waiting in his driveway as he arrived home that night, and that Hackney appeared to be intoxicated. The victim, becoming concerned, texted his girlfriend who was inside the house to tell her that "Paul was drunk and to lock the doors.GÇ¥
The victim told police that he and Hackney exchanged words; however, the victim did not get out of his truck. He proceeded to park in his typical parking space, thinking that Hackney would simply leave. He reported that he next saw Hackney standing outside of his car and yelling at him, but he couldn't hear what was being said.
The next thing the victim reported was hearing the shot come through his truck's windshield, and feeling the glass fragments shower down on him as he sat in the driver's seat.
He told police that the shot hit the windshield only inches from where he was sitting.
The victim reported that he then crawled out of his truck, ran into a pasture and called 911.
Snohomish County deputies stopped Hackney at approximately 11:22 p.m. and took him into custody after performing a high risk stop. High risk stops are standard procedure any time police believe a suspect could be armed or otherwise dangerous. According to the police affidavit, Hackney refused to interact with the officers, refusing to answer any questions. Once he stated that he understood his Miranda rights, he reportedly told the officers, "I am not saying anything, period.GÇ¥
Hackney's vehicle was towed to a Sultan shop where it was secured. A deputy transported his dog to the Everett Animal Shelter for care.
The victim reported to police that Hackney is a family friend of his girlfriend, and he believes the attack may have been motivated by Hackney's desire to have a relationship with her.
Hackney was held in Snohomish County Jail over the weekend, and was released on a $50,000 -ábond on Monday, July 29.
