A 79-year-old Monroe man died and several people were injured in a multiple vehicle collision on State Route 203 on Sunday afternoon.
The Washington State Patrol reports Robert Allender was driving a 1981 Toyota pickup southbound on SR 203, about a mile south of Monroe, when he slowed to make a left turn into a private driveway.
A 2001 Dodge Ram driven by a 48-year-old Ferndale man struck Allender’s vehicle, according to WSP, pushing his truck into the northbound lane of SR 203, where a 2008 Honda Fit struck him head-on.
Fire District 7 reports one patient, identified as Allender by WSP, had to be extricated from his vehicle. While en route to Providence Hospital in Everett, crews had to begin CPR. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
A 56-year-old Monroe woman with Allender at the time of the collision was taken to Providence, as was a 19-year-old Bellingham man who was a passenger in the northbound Fit. Two other passengers in the Fit, a 19-year-old Issaquah woman and 18-year-old Fall City woman, were taken to EvergreenHealth Monroe.
The driver of the Fit that collided with Allender’s pickup, a 19-year-old Issaquah man, was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with severe injuries.
The driver of the 2001 Dodge Ram that rear-ended Allender’s truck was uninjured, according to WSP.
SR 203 was closed for several hours in both directions as WSP investigated. There are no charges at this time.
