Beginning Friday, the annual series of weekly free concerts at Lake Tye will get underway. The concerts feature bands playing a variety of music from classic rock to Cajun to country. Arranged by the Monroe Chamber of Commerce and the Parks Department, they take place each Thursday or Friday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Lake Tye Park, and concessions and a beer garden are usually available.
Following is a schedule of the bands slated to play, including brief descriptions of each.
Friday, July 17: The Black Vinyl Allstars
The Black Vinyl Allstars is a rock-n-roll cover band specializing in Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and The Who. The band, formed in 2000, features members of top Seattle rock bands including Crack Sabbath and Super Sonic Soul Pimps. In addition to Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and The Who, the band may also play songs from Aerosmith, The Allman Brothers, Boston, ZZ Top, Deep Purple and other classic rock bands.
Friday, July 24: The Senate
The Senate is an eclectic and unusual collaboration between a jazz bassist, a rock guitarist with classical training, and a guitarist who formerly played African drums. The trio performs highly energetic acoustic music with two acoustic guitars, an upright bass, and vocal harmony. The band, formed in 2002, has won significant recognition, including winning first place in Washington State University's 2007 Battle of the Bands.
Friday, July 31: Creme Tangerine
Cr+¿me Tangerine is a cover band that plays Beatles music. Unlike many tribute bands, Cr+¿me Tangerine doesn't dress up like the band they emulate, choosing to focus instead on the music. The band plays music from the various eras of the Beatles, and can perform The White Album and Abbey Road in their entireties.
Thursday, August 6: File Gumbo
For 25 years, File Gumbo has performed the music of Louisiana's bayou to Pacific Northwest audiences. Aficionados will appreciate that File Gumbo has performed with such nationally renowned bayou luminaries as Queen Ida, Katie Webster and Buckwheat Zydeco. Among the styles the band is likely to perform are Cajun, zydeco, New Orleans rhythm & blues, "swamp pop,GÇ¥ Dixieland, country blues, Tex-Mex and Western Swing.
Thursday, August 13: Chance McKinney
Chance McKinney puts a whole new spin on county music, adding elements of contemporary rock, Motown and even heavy
metal, creating a style of his own he calls "industrial country." The 6'6GÇ¥ Montana native moved to Seattle and quickly achieved significant success, opening for Kenny Chesney and serving as county station KMPS' house band for four years. In 2009, McKinny won Country Music Television's #1 "unsigned" artist award, having gotten 1 million votes in the final round. Since then, he has shared stages with Dwight Yoakam, Kenny Rogers and Alan Jackson, among others.
Thursday, August 20: Heart by Heart
Heart by Heart is a Seattle band that plays the music of Heart from the "70s and "80s. The band is more than a tribute band; it features Heart's co-founding member and bassist Steve Fossen and original Heart drummer Mike Derosier, both inductees in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Thursday, August 27, Nate Church Band
The Nate Church Band will appeal to lovers of blues music. The band plays blues, blues rock and classic rock, including Texas and West Coast blues styles, and includes the sounds of blues icons T-Bone Walker, Gatemouth Brown, Albert Collins, Freddie King and Otis Rush.
