Monroe Walmart celebrates long-awaited grand opening

 
 


Monroe's new Walmart store celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that took place at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 3.
The new Walmart store, located at 19191 N. Kelsey St. in Monroe, will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and will provide approximately 200 new jobs in the community.
Store manager Don Albaugh and Monroe Mayor Geoffrey Thomas cut the ribbon while numerous guests looked on.
"We are excited to open our doors just in time for the holidays,GÇ¥ said Albaugh in a recent press release. "We hope to be able to offer a pleasant shopping experience to the Monroe community, both for their seasonal and everyday needs.GÇ¥
Albaugh, who has been with Walmart since 1995, began his career as an garden center associate, making an hourly wage.


During the ceremony, donation monies were gifted to several local nonprofit agencies. Albaugh passed out commemorative checks including $1,000 to the Monroe Public Schools Foundation; $2,000 to the Maltby Food Bank; $300 to the American Cancer Society; $1,000 to the Monroe YMCA; $2,000 to the Sky Valley Food Bank; $500 to the Skykomish School District and $6,000 to the Monroe Arts Council. A donation was also made to the Gold Bar Elementary School PTA.
Additionally, a check for $49,000 was presented to the Marysville Food Bank.
"Monroe and the Sky Valley community are delighted to embrace diversity in our shopping experience,GÇ¥ said Monroe Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Una Wirkebau-Hartt. "We welcome the opening of Walmart and are thrilled that 200 more locals have jobs which will increase economic vitality in our area. The store has already begun helping our nonprofits with a donation of both time and money for the Monroe Arts Council and the much needed upgrades of Wagner Auditorium. The Chamber looks forward to their


continuing partnerships.GÇ¥
The new 156,000 square foot Walmart store includes a full grocery department with produce, a bakery, a deli, a meat department and other grocery items including organic selections. The store will also feature electronics, furniture, home d+¬cor, automotive supplies, sporting goods, home improvement supplies, clothing and a pharmacy. There is also an on-site fuel station.
Shopping can be done online for customers who wish to quickly stop by and pick up their merchandise. Online orders can often be prepared in the same day.
