National Night Out brings events to Sky Valley towns Tuesday

Communities across the Sky Valley are gearing up for National Night Out (NNO) 2015, which will be taking place on Tuesday, Aug. 4, in Gold Bar, Sultan and Monroe.
The nationwide event began in 1984 as a method of promoting crime prevention and fostering partnerships between the community and law enforcement. Held every year on the first Tuesday in August, the event boasts participation in 16,124 communities across all 50 states.
All Sky Valley NNO events are free to attend.
Monroe: 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Lake Tye Park (14964 Fryelands Blvd.)
A collaboration between the Monroe Rotary Club and the Monroe Police Department, Monroe's National Night Out event is the largest in the valley. Last year's NNO was attended by nearly 5,000 people, with a total of 68 vendor booths. Rotarian Sally Petty has served as the NNO project manager since 2009, stepping in to help save the event when it seemed doomed due to financial constraints.
The year, the Monroe event will feature numerous police and fire department demonstrations including K9, crime prevention, DUI goggles and car seat safety. First responder displays will include a police car, fire truck and medic unit, and kids will get the opportunity to meet both McGruff the Crime Dog and Sparky the Fire Dog.
Free food will be served during the event, including hot dogs, pizza, cookies and other refreshments. Family-friendly activities will include face-painting, a scavenger hunt, bouncy houses, a photo booth and more.
Gold Bar: 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Gold Bar Elementary School (419 Lewis Ave.)
Organized by Gold Bar city staff and the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office, Gold Bar's Night Out event kicks off with a parade at 6:30 p.m. that travels west down Lewis Avenue from the Gold Bar Family Grocer. The parade will feature the newly crowned Gold Dust Royalty, the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office, Snohomish County Fire District No. 26 and many others.
A community celebration will follow the parade, including free hotdogs, vendor booths and more.
Sultan: 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Volunteers of America Western Washington Sky Valley Resource Center (617 First St.)
Coordinated by the Sultan Community Task Force, the Volunteers of America and the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office, Sultan's Night Out event is brand new this year. The community celebration is being supported by Snohomish County Fire District No. 5, Snohomish County Search and Rescue, Burlington-Northern Santa Fe Railway and the Sultan Block Watch.
The event will include free hot dogs, activities for kids including games, prizes and face-painting, a bouncy house and more. All are welcome to attend the free event.
