National Night Out to take place Aug. 6

Monroe's annual National Night Out Against Crime event has been planned for Tuesday, Aug. 6 at Lake Tye Park.
Organized once again by the Monroe Rotary Club in conjunction with the Monroe Police Department, it will start at 5:30 and go until 8:30 p.m. including all the activities that have become favorites in recent years.
There will be five bouncy houses, a cheer demonstration by West Coast Flight's Special Needs Team, strolling mascots including McGruff, the crime-fighting dog, and Sparky, the Monroe Fire Department mascot, among others.
Kids can enjoy a scavenger hunt; there will also be a photo booth, music, a dunk tank and face painting.
There will be a number of demonstrations by the police and fire departments, as well, including the popular K9 police dog demonstrations, a crime investigation booth, a car seat safety booth, DUI goggles, and emergency vehicles to explore.
The fire department will also bring the trailer that is used to train people to escape a burning home; it uses simulated smoke and a heated door to create the atmosphere of a house with a house fire in it, and firefighters help people escape through a window.
This year there will be more booths from businesses and organizations than ever; reservations quickly outpaced the number of spaces available, so the Rotary Club is arranging for more space.
There will also be lots of free food including hot dogs, pizza donated by Sahara Pizza, sno-cones, popcorn, cookies and bottled water.
