Need for Speed Week proclamation made

Monroe Mayor Pro Tem Patsy Cudaback read the 2016 Speed Week Proclamation last week, an annual Monroe tradition meant to promote the Summer Showdown and other racing events at the Evergreen Speedway during the week of June 20-25.

In addition to encouraging the community to visit the track, Speed Week celebrates the relationship between the city and award-winning speedway operators Doug and Traci Hobbs, who have managed the track since 2011. The two oversee track operations based on a public-private partnership with Snohomish County, and are in the midst of a 25-year operating agreement.

The two are an integral part of the Monroe community; Traci serves as secretary on the Monroe Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and she and Doug believe strongly in giving back. One of the ways they do so is by hosting raffles throughout racing season called 50/50 raffles, during which a portion of the proceeds is donated to local Monroe nonprofit groups.

The Monroe Lions Club, the Monroe Chamber of Commerce, the Monroe Kiwanis, the Monroe Gospel Women's Mission and Pennies for Puppies have all been beneficiaries of 50/50 raffles.

Evergreen Speedway is recognized as a top-10 NASCAR home track and is the only NASCAR sanctioned track in Washington.
