Poor welcome

Monroe sign tagged, trees chopped on Aug. 13

The city of Monroe’s welcome sign at the roundabout that intersects West Main Street and Tester Road was tagged on Sunday, Aug. 13.

The crime occurred sometime late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, according to the Monroe Police Department. MPD administrative director Debbie Willis said about $3,900 in damage was done.

Aside from writing on the sign with white paint, three mature birch trees were cut down with a chain saw and left behind around the roadway, Willis said. Two rhododendrons and smaller azaleas became casualties when the trees fell, she said.

Willis said there are a few guesses as to who might have committed the crime, but no concrete evidence has turned up yet. No nearby businesses captured the suspects on video surveillance, she said.

The department released photos of the scene and is seeking information from the public. The writing on the sign reads “TB 2017 2018” with the welcome message’s “to” set in the middle of both years.

It is possible the dates indicate the coming school year, which is about to start, and that students may be responsible, Willis said. The act is considered second-degree malicious mischief, which is a Class C felony in Washington, she said.

The department is asking anyone with information call 360-794-6300. Anonymous tips can be left at 360-863-4600.
