The Snohomish County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue and Dive Team Units recovered the body of a 24-year-old Monroe man who went missing at Eagle Falls on Memorial Day about 50 yards upriver on Saturday.

A 911 report came in just before 4 p.m. Monday, May 28, stating the man had jumped in the Skykomish River near Eagle Falls but never resurfaced. Eagle Falls is located between Index and Baring.

A dive team searched the area, but Gold Bar Fire District 26 announced the rescue switched to recovery around 5:30 p.m.

Sheriff’s spokesperson Shari Ireton tells the Monitor that an aerial search was conducted last Tuesday, and the SnoHAWK 10 helicopter returned on Wednesday, as did a dive team that searched the water.

A Saturday news release states the man’s body was found in about 10 feet of water, and a positive identification and cause of death will need to be provided by the medical examiner’s office.

The news release points out that this is the third backcountry drowning near a waterfall this year. A 30-year-old Bothell woman was found floating in the water at Wallace Falls State Park on April 24, and the body of a Monroe woman who disappeared at Cedar Ponds on April 12 was recovered nine days later.Flickr/Howard Ryder: The body of a 24-year-old Monroe man, who missing after jumping into the river near Eagle Falls on Monday, May 28, was recovered 50 yards upriver on Saturday, June 2.
