Although winners have been being notified for more than a week, the general public had to wait until Friday evening to learn the results of the annual King 5 Best of Western Washington contest, and when they were announced, 13 Sky Valley businesses and service providers were among them.
The annual contest, a project of the King 5 show Evening Magazine, allows people to nominate their favorite businesses in 218 categories, then vote on them.
The field of nominees can be massive; in the category of Best Dry Cleaning, for example, there were more 200 nominees scattered throughout the Puget Sound region, meaning that Monroe's Hill Street Cleaners topped about 195 other contenders to make fifth place.
The competition could be impressive, too. In the category of Best School with the Most Spirit, Snohomish High came in first, followed by the University of Washington and Washington State University, putting Monroe (in 5th place) in prestigious company.
In all, there were more than half a million votes cast, and when it was over, the following Sky Valley businesses and people were in the top five.
