Snohomish County Fire District No. 5 to host CERT training at Sultan fire station

Starting next week, the city of Sultan and Snohomish County Fire District No. 5 will host a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training course that is free to attend.-á

The eight-week series will start on Tuesday, Sept. 15, and run through Tuesday, Nov. 3. Classes will be held 6-9 p.m. each week at the Sultan Fire Department, 304 Alder St. in Sultan. Volunteer Coordinator Donna Murphy has been organizing the CERT training with volunteer project manager Kenda Machorro.

Machorro has more than 10 years of experience in emergency management and will teach the free CERT series. She was the instructor during the city's last CERT series in 2013.-á

"With the current emergency situations in our state, we feel it is important for citizens to be ready to care for themselves,GÇ¥ Machorro said. "The class offers a well-rounded variety of information on surviving emergencies.GÇ¥

The series includes instruction on disaster preparedness, disaster fire suppression, disaster medical care, terrorism, disaster psychology, light search and rescue, flagging and CERT organization. There also will be a disaster drill.

"Since we're coming into the winter season, this is always good information,GÇ¥ said Sky Valley Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Debbie Copple. "They teach folks how to help the whole community in the event of any sort of disaster.GÇ¥
