Drivers who use State Route 522 near Monroe should be prepared for a-á month-long closure of the SR 522 fly-over ramp to eastbound U.S. 2. The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2 through 5 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1.
Drivers can access eastbound U.S. 2 by traveling past the fly-over exit to the end of SR 522 where a signalized intersection allows drivers to turn east or west onto U.S. 2.
During the extended ramp closure, contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will waterproof the concrete decks on the existing SR 522 West Main Street/164th Street S.E. and 179th Avenue-áS.E. bridges. They will also rebuild the approaches to the 179th Avenue-áS.E. bridge.
In order to create a safe work zone, traffic must be temporarily shifted onto the new bridges over 164th Street-áS.E. and 179th Avenue-áS.E. The proximity of the SR 522 179th Avenue-áS.E. bridge work zone to the U.S. 2 off-ramp is too close to allow drivers to safely use the exit.
There will also be other nightly lane and ramp closures associated with this work.
The work is part of the SR 522 widening project, which adds two new westbound lanes to the highway from U.S. 2 to the Snohomish River Bridge. The widening project is scheduled to be complete in late 2014.
