On Halloween, instead of trick-or-treating for candy in local neighborhoods, some Monroe High School students came together to create change by collecting nonperishable foods to donate to the Sky Valley Food Bank.
The program,-áWe Scare Hunger,-áis an initiative by the Free the Children program to help inspire kids to-ácreate change locally and to serve their communities. More than 40 Monroe High School students volunteered their time to collect food.
The event was organized by MHS Leadership students Karen Vasatka and Alyson Gonzalez by splitting up neighborhoods into sections to make sure as much area as possible was covered. They also had taken fliers around to these neighborhoods the day before so people had advanced notice of the We Scare Hunger food drive.
Through the collaboration of the kids, they collected 1,385 pounds of food for the Sky Valley Food Bank.
"Volunteers at the Sky Valley Food Bank were very excited to receive so much food and the kids were ecstatic to be able to help out,GÇ¥ said the school district, in a press release.
