Sultan Elementary School receives state's highest honor for third consecutive year

Sultan Elementary School (501 Date St.) is one of 402 schools named a 2014 Washington Achievement Award winner. The school was selected out of nearly 2,300 public schools in the state. Winners were notified via email from State Superintendent Randy Dorn and State Board of Education Chair Isabel Munoz-Colon.
Sultan Elementary School is one of the few regional schools that has consistently won awards for academic achievement: 2010 KTBS Golden Apple Award for Math Lesson Studies and Microsoft Classroom Technology innovation;-á 2011, 2012 State School of Distinction Awards in math and reading; 2012, 2013 and 2014 State Achievement Awards in math, reading and science.
The Washington Achievement Award is sponsored by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and the state Board of Education. Award winners are selected using the state's Accountability Index and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act Flexibility Waiver. It comines both state and federal accountability criteria.
Schools are recognized as top performers in one of six categories: overall excellence, high progress, reading growth, math growth, extended graduation rate and English language acquisition. Sultan Elementary School is being recognized in two of the six categories: reading growth and math growth.
"So many schools in our state are doing good work to make a difference for kids,GÇ¥ Dorn said. "These awards represent some of the best. It's an honor to recognize them and celebrate their success.GÇ¥
The award-winning schools will be honored at a ceremony on April 28 at Spanaway Lake High School in Spanaway.
