Sultan Elementary School is one of 413 schools that is a 2013 Washington Achievement Award winner out of nearly 2,300 public schools in the state.
The Washington Achievement Award is sponsored by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and the State Board of Education. Award winners are selected using the state's Accountability Index and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) Flexibility Waiver.-áIt combines both state and federal accountability criteria, making this award very difficult to attain.
Schools are recognized as top performers in one of six categories: overall excellence, high progress, reading growth, math growth, extended graduation rate (awarded to high and comprehensive schools only), and-áEnglish language acquisition. Sultan Elementary School was recognized for high progress, reading growth and math growth.
Randy Dorn, Superintendent of Public Instruction for Washington State, said, "So many schools in our state are doing good work to make a difference for kids," he said. "These awards represent some of the best. It's an honor to recognize them and celebrate their success."
The award-winning schools were honored at a ceremony on April 24 at Timberline High School in Lacey.
