Sultan fisherman dies in Skykomish River

Fishing partner says boat struck rock, knocking them into water

Updated June 26: The Snohomish County Medical Examiner released the identity of the man who was found dead after the boat he was fishing in on the Skykomish River overturned. The cause of Bryan E. Rose's death was drowning and the manner was accident, according to the agency.

A Sultan resident died after the boat he was fishing on overturned in the Skykomish River near Gold Bar early Saturday.

Emergency crews responded to the Big Eddy Boat Launch just after 5 a.m., according to a Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office news release. A Fire District 7 Swift Water Team rescue boat rescued the the victim’s fishing partner, who was able to get to shore and report his friend was still in the water. He was checked by aid personnel at the scene.

The fishermen had set out on the river about an hour earlier, according to the release. They drifted a half-mile downstream before the current pinned their boat against a rock, forcing both fishermen into the water. 

The 57-year-old Sultan man’s body was recovered a half-mile from the launch site.

“River levels are high this time of year with water temperatures around 45 degrees,” according to the release.
