Despite the gloomy, wet forecast last week, there was no rain at all on Sultan High School’s 2016 Homecoming Parade. In fact, a glimmer of blue sky was clearly visible above Sultan City Hall as the Turks glided by in a flurry of color and sound.
The annual Sultan High School Homecoming Parade cheerfully bounded through the city at around 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21, with great fanfare and panache. In addition to showcasing this year’s Homecoming King and Queen, Tanner Belcher and Grace Low, the parade gave the award-winning Sultan High School marching band the opportunity to shine and the Sultan Turks football players the chance to look fierce. Numerous others participated, including the senior homecoming prince and princess, Lady Turk Volleyball, the Sultan High School cheerleaders and the Sultan Turk himself.
The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office led the way, while firefighters from Snohomish County Fire District 5 ended the procession in two of their emergency vehicles.
Nobody is really sure how long the parade has been going on, but Sultan High School Athletic Director and Assistant Principal Scott Sifferman estimates that it’s been around eight years.
“The parade helps us celebrate our homecoming royalty with each class decorating a float or mobile device that matches up with their part of the homecoming theme,” Sifferman said. “It also lets us celebrate other groups like our marching band, fall sports teams and other clubs interesting in joining in the fun.”
Homecoming welcomes alumni and former residents of the area back to enjoy the football game. Unfortunately for Turks fans, the football team took a loss against the King’s during the homecoming game.
