A proclamation was read at Sultan's City Council meeting last week, recognizing Saturday, Sept. 28 as a day of remembrance and honor to be marked by the Return of the Salmon Celebration. The celebration will take place from noon to 4 p.m. in Osprey Park and will serve as both a tribute to Chief John T'seul-Ted, otherwise known as Sultan John, and an opportunity to celebrate the salmon which return to the Sultan River every year to spawn.
"The Return of the Salmon Celebration is about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to understand the importance of the salmon's life cycle, and their presence in the Sultan River. It's about respecting the trees, animals, water and air as habitats on the Planet Earth,GÇ¥ said Donna Murphy, Sultan's Grants and Economic Development Coordinator.
The celebration will include a welcoming ceremony performed by the Tulalip Tribe; a Native flute concert; riverside fish viewing tours; Native storytelling; a medicinal tree presentation; a horse-drawn wagon ride to the high school salmon hatchery; Native drumming and dance; food, including Big Bear's Indian tacos and huckleberry shortcakes; vendors; children's activities and a raffle.
The proclamation was read by Return of the Salmon Chair Craig Young, and signed by Sultan Mayor Carolyn Eslick.
Young acknowledged the hard work accomplished by local volunteers who assisted him in coordinating this year's festival, thanking the city of Sultan for its support, as well as the Sultan City Council.
"This is an amazing town and I'm really proud to be a resident here,GÇ¥ said Young.
Osprey Park is located at 801 First St. in Sultan.
