A series of free summer concerts at Lake Tye Park kicks off this Thursday.
The Snohomish Artists Guild is bringing a set of four free summer concerts by regional bands to Lake Tye Park this summer. The concerts will take place every Thursday evening from July 18 to Aug. 8, from7 to 11:30 p.m.
The guild, formed in 1999, is dedicated to bringing awareness and appreciation of the performing arts all over the west coast.
Director of events Cliff Verhoeff explained that the performing arts are important to a community because the events they bring give opportunities for people to get out of the house, participate in fun and engaging events, and meet fellow members of their community.
While the guild initially set up events only in Snohomish County, the effort has expanded to a larger part of the Pacific Northwest. The guild now produces and hosts more than 50 events per year in both Washington and Oregon.
The guild's concert series have been successful in other cities, but it wasn't until a volunteer suggested that Monroe would be a good venue for a series that Verhoeff explored the possibility. He concluded that Monroe had the population base and demographic to make the series work.
The concerts are funded by donations from supporters.
The first concert, on July 18, will feature the music of Northwestern soul band The Hitmen. The band, comprised of multiple musicians with decades of experience, performs covers of a wide range of musical styles. While their playlist does tend to include soulful acts such as Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder, they also include their own soul-influenced arrangements of songs from other genres such as pop (Maroon 5), hard rock (AC/DC), and even hip hop (Outkast).
July 25, the Black-Vinyl All Stars will take the stage at Lake Tye Park. This classic rock cover band specializes in covers of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and The Who. The band features several prominent musicians from the Seattle music scene, who are also members of other bands including the jazzy Black Sabbath/classic jazz cover band, Crack Sabbath, as well as the softer folk melodies of 17th Chapter. Black-Vinyl All Stars hold nothing back on stage, delivering a loud and thrilling classic rock sound, Verhoeff said.
Aug.1, the park will host Cream Tangerine, a Beatles cover band that takes stylistically from the legendary rock group everything from their music to their appearance. The band performs classics such as "Get BackGÇ¥ and "Something,GÇ¥ but aren't afraid to venture into the more experimental side of The Beatles' catalogue with songs like "I Want You/She's So HeavyGÇ¥ and songs from their famous late-career 1968 White Album.
Closing out the concerts on Aug. 8 is the singer/songwriter duo Cloverdayle. Cloverdayle consists of the married couple Chad and
Rachel Hamar and their original country songs. The duo hails from the not-traditionally-country locale of Portland, Ore., and has been writing music together since 2008. In the spring of 2012, they began to work on their first full-length LP, which includes the radio single "Like We Were Kids Again,GÇ¥ which has received national airtime.
Their live shows are known to be high energy, and they have performed with such high profile country stars as Lady Antebellum and Tim McGraw.
