Touch-a-Truck event to put kids behind the wheel

By Margaret Bashour, Freelance writer
Kids will be able to get behind the wheel of some of their favorite vehicles and meet their hometown heroes in Monroe June 1, when the Monroe Christian School will present its first annual Touch-A-Truck event.
Little ones will be invited to climb in and explore fire engines, police cars, farm equipment and even racecars from Evergreen Speedway and learn how they work. They will also be able to meet the stars that own and operate the vehicles.
Touch-A-Truck events have been held throughout the country, in cities like Dallas, San Diego, and Las Vegas. Monroe has even had a Touch-A-Truck before, and volunteer coordinator Molly Daniels thought it would be a good way to bring the fun back to Monroe and raise awareness for some of its sponsors.
The event's main sponsor, Monroe Christian School, is a private school located in Monroe that instructs students from preschool through eighth grade, and has put on other fundraising events for the school, as well as other events such as food drives.
Touch-A-Truck will incorporate local businesses, also giving them a chance to put their features on display. Ben Franklin will sponsor a craft table and Moonie Icy Tunes will roll in with their mobile ice cream to satisfy any sweet tooth. Live tunes will be provided courtesy of Sunday Speedtrap.
A few local celebrities will even be in attendance, including Tow Mater from the movie "Cars.GÇ¥ Blitz, the Seattle Seahawks mascot, will be there from 10-10:45 a.m. to take pictures and sign autographs.
Monroe Christian School will sponsor a kids' area with bouncy houses, face painting, craft tables, and much more.
"This is a fun event for all ages,GÇ¥ said Daniels, and Touch-A-Truck is certainly shaping up to be an experience Monroe families will not want to miss. Along with catering to all the fun and exciting things kids love to do, the event will honor children with special needs and sensitive ears during its "horn-free hourGÇ¥ from 10-11 am.
Entry is $5 for individuals and $25 for families, although discount family passes may be available at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/367777.-á Drawings for free passes will be held each week on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/mcstouchatruck.
