On Thursday, Sultan High School (SHS) sent some Turks to state competitions. Freshman Tyler Amold qualified for the state golf tournament. He golfed well the first day and made the cut to play the second day. He finished the tournament in 37th place.
The girls' softball team was also sent off for the state competition and finished in a four-way tie for ninth place. The girls lost against Montesano 10-0, won against Naches Valley 4-1, then lost against Cle Elum 5-1 and were eliminated. This is the first time in 12 years that a Sultan girls team has won a state game.
Claudia Hubbard and Austin U'Ren qualified for the state track meet. Hubbard placed fifth in javelin and 15th in discus. U'Ren placed 14th in the 400-meter run. Earlier in the year, U'Ren also broke our school record for the 400-meter run with a time of 51.23. Congratulations Turks, and way to represent!
On May 28, SHS hosted Academic Awards, and many Turks were honored for their academic achievements. Mayor Carolyn Eslick was there to award the Mayor's Youth Achievement Award for Sultan to Sara Salazar. Mayor Linda Loen was there to give out the award for Gold Bar to Matt Baller. The 2015 yearbook staff received the Walsworth Excellence Award for this year's yearbook. Each of the departments came up and gave their awards, and at the end, Mr. Sifferman recognized all of the Turk of the Weeks.
