Turk Talk: Winter activities keeping Turks busy

We have officially hit the ground running with our winter activities! The basketball teams, the wrestling team, the cheer squad, and the cast of the musical have begun their practices.
Even before the basketball season started, you were bound to see basketball players working hard in open gym during the off season, so we hope to see their hard work pay off in the games. The girls' basketball team has barely enough players to fill the varsity, JV and C teams, so they are looking for more players to join!
The musical this year will be "Grease.GÇ¥ Try-out results have come out, and our leads for the year are Sarah Swift as Sandy Olsson, and Shad McDonnell as Danny Zuko! They will be performing with a cast, tech and pit specially-chosen by Mrs. Sumpter and Ms. Wheeler, and they are all preparing for the big performances in February.
Our Sultan High School chapter of the National Honors Society has also been working quite hard. On Friday the 14, they had their first Turk Trail maintenance where they cleared the trail of blackberry bushes, weeds and any potential hazards to cross country runners. They were able to thrash through most of the trail after their early release day.
Although this was initially done by Conan the Librarian, he was unable to continue due to injury, so the NHS students gladly accepted the responsibility of maintaining the trails regularly for the rest of the year.
Some NHS students also were able participate in Operation Christmas Child on November 16. It is an event run by Samaritan's Purse, where they package Christmas presents for less fortunate children across the world who otherwise may not be able to receive a present.
The event was held at the SHS commons and hosted by Crosswater Community Church in collaboration with a mission group by the name of F.L.A.M.E. NHS also had a blood drive scheduled, but due to difficulties with the Bloodmobile from the American Red Cross, they were unable to hold the blood drive. They had it rescheduled it for November 24, and the NHS students helped to run the blood drive quite smoothly.
On Friday, November 21, it became apparent that the Coffee Grinder had disappeared from our commons. The Coffee Grinder is a little business run by Mrs. Wood and a handful of our students. For some reason, the Coffee Grinder has been deemed as unfitting for the commons by a higher power, and so was asked to move.
After much commotion, a petition was created by the students to try and stop the Coffee Grinder from being put in a farther location. The petition gathered more than 170 signatures, and we are curious to see how the administration will act.
