Turk Talk/Fall seasons come to an end

By Ruth Tess, Contributing Writer
As Sultan High School celebrated Veterans Day, the ASB had some activities set up for the occasion. On Thursday during the lunch periods, there were paper stars that were set out for the students to write the name of a person who had served in the military, or is currently serving. All of the stars were later placed on the lockers of the school. On Friday, we had all of our P.E. classes run with the flag in honor of those who have served, along with the Highway 2 Freedom Runner, Dave Sivewright.
On Friday, we were able to send two of our cross country runners to State! McCrea-áBlack was qualified to run at the State cross country meet with his personal record of 17 minutes and 51 seconds at the District 1A Championship, as he got 18th place. This is the first time in five years that we have had a cross country runner go to State! Nicholas Sorgen was very close to qualifying for State so he was able to go as an alternate, and he was able to support and accompany McCrea at the State competition on Saturday. At State, McCrea ran his 5K with a time of 17 minutes and 57 seconds and placed 77th in the 1A District. Since McCrea still has two more seasons of cross country left, we hope to cheer him on as he continues to succeed.
As we ended our football season on October 30, we were able to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Connor Crowley had a grand idea of how to fundraise for the cause. He volunteered to be thrown water balloons at for a price of one dollar for each balloon. By the end of the night, he was drenched, but was fairly rewarded with donations for the cause. For his thoughtful act, he was awarded Turk of the Week.
As for marching band, they ended their season at the Auburn Veteran's Day Parade and the Auburn Marching Band Competition. The parade was held during the day, and our Turks won first place with a score of 81.70. Jill Sumpter, our band director, received many compliments as the band passed the crowds. For dinner, the band parents got together and held the annual barbeque including lots of delicious desserts. Later in the day, the band performed their field show and placed second with their highest score of the season of a 74.03. After a long day of doing all sorts of fun things along with performing, the majority were ready for a good night's rest, along with a shower or two.
