Snohomish County Fire District No. 5 serves 72 square miles, including the area surrounding Sultan and Startup. The district employs a combination of both full-time and volunteer firefighters, who respond to approximately 1,000 calls per year. Roughly 70 percent of the district's calls are for emergency medical services and rescues, with fire, hazardous conditions and severe weather incidents making up the remaining 30 percent.

No one is sure how long District 5 has been hosting Visit Santa at the Fire Station, but it's been going on for as long as anyone can remember. Sky Valley Chamber of Commerce Director Debbie Copple said it's gone on for so long that the grandchildren of longtime Sultan residents that remember the event from when they were kids are now participating.
