Richard William Carney (Dick) October 23, 1924 - April 3, 2022
Richard William Carney (Dick), age 97, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2022 in his home in Eatonville, Washington. He and his wife June had lived there for the last 40+ years. Dick was born in Jamestown, North Dakota on October 23, 1924 to Edward and Gladys Carney and soon thereafter moved, with his family to San Francisco, California where he attended Mission High School. At age 18, he signed up for the Army and became a part of the World War II War effort in the South Pacific. He volunteered for and was assigned to The Provisional Flame Throwers Unit. Dick spent four years serving his country and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for his outstanding service. When the War was over in 1944, he joined his family who had moved to the Eatonville, Washington area. He soon thereafter met June and they got married in 1946. They had two sons, John and Jim. Family time was important to him but he still managed to find time for hunting, fishing, and spending some time with a few of his friends and extended family. He worked 20 years at Ft. Lewis as a civilian employee where he was at first painter and then painter foreman. As time went by he gradually became more interested in volunteer work with both the Washington State Game Department and the Eatonville Police Department. In 1970 he left his job at Ft. Lewis to become the Police Chief of Eatonville. June often acted as the dispatcher. After 4 years they retired and bought the Moclips Motel and took on the responsibilities of owner/manager. The 7 day a week schedule was a little hectic at times but it was hard to get reliable help. After 4 years of this semi-retirement the Police Chief Job in Eatonville opened up again and Dick decided to take it on, and did so for almost another 6 years before a final move into full time retirement.
Dick is survived by his son John (DiAnn) Carney , two grandchildren Shannon Carney and Shaunna (Philip) Tweet and 6 great-grandchildren Payton (Samantha), Bronson, Landon, Jenna, Jepson and Hudson Tweet and 1 great-great grandson Finnick Tweet (due in June), many nieces, nephews and longtime friends. Dick was proceeded in death by his parents, wife June, son Jim Carney and great-granddaughter Lilly Ann Tweet. There will be a celebration of Dick’s life for family and friends on June 5th at the CenterPoint Church (351 Madison Ave. So.) Eatonville, WA 98328 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm.
