All-State honors for Eagles, Cruisers

By Pat Jenkins The Dispatch Based on the 2014 Associated Press All-State teams, some of the best high school football talent in Washington is in south Pierce County. Three players from Graham-Kapowsin and two from Eatonville were named to the statewide all-star teams voted on by newspaper, radio and television reporters affiliated with the Associated Press. For Graham-Kapowsin, Foster Sarell was picked for the second consecutive year as an offensive lineman, and Dan Lorenz was tapped as a linebacker. They're part of the 4A first team, while running back Shannon Edwards was chosen for the second team. Justin Kaelin and George Tomal, standouts for Eatonville's 1A state tournament semifinalists, were named to the 1A All-State first team on defense GÇô Kaelin as a lineman and Tomal as a linebacker. The honors capped seasons in which Graham-Kapowsin and Eatonville reached the semifinals of their state tournaments. Eatonville dominated the Evergreen League, going undefeated and winning the regular-season title in its first year in the conference. Graham-Kapowsin had a 10-game winning streak in an 11-2 record. The second loss was to Chiawana in Pasco in the semifinals of the 4A tourney. Until the setback by the eventual state champion, Graham-Kapowsin was rolling with an explosive offense, and Sarell was a big part of that. The 6 foot 6, 310-pound lineman, a sophomore, became a two-time All-Stater and solidified his standing as one of Washington's top college prospects in the eyes of college recruiters and high school football observers. On the defensive side, Lorenz was an anchor for Graham-Kapowsin. He was a consistent star at linebacker en route to All-State status in his senior year. Edwards, also a senior, was a touchdown machine for the Eagles. He ran for 32, scoring in every game except agains Chiawana. The 1A All-State defense has a strong Eatonville influence with Kaelin and Tomal. The only school with more selections is Cascade Christian, the team that gave the Cruisers (11-1) their first loss of the season in the state tournament semifinals and went on to win the championship. Kaelin, who also has gained statewide acclaim as a state shot put champion in track and field, was a force on Eatonville's defensive line. Tomal, the Evergreen League's Most Valuable Player in voting by coaches, was equally dominant from from his linebacker position. Both are seniors. State Player of the Year honors went to players who are familiar to Graham-Kapowsin and Eatonville GÇô Chiawana running back Austin Urlacher in the 4A group and Cascade Christian quarterback Jason Goldsmith in the 1A division. Cascade Christian had 10 All-State choices overall.
