Only a few days remain for voters in Eatonville to narrow the field of candidates for mayor and for voters throughout Pierce County to make prelimlinary choices for Tacoma Port Commissioner. The primary election ends Aug. 6. Ballots must be mailed to the county elections department or deposited at official drop boxes by that day. The results after ballots are counted will determine the two candidates in each race who advance to the general election in November. The earliest results will be reported at dispatchnews.com. The newspaper's Aug. 7 print edition won't have results, as it will have gone to press before results are available. For Eatonville's mayor, the contenders so far are Gordon Bowman, Jim Valentine, Mike Schaub and Bud Lucas. Bowman and Valentine are Town Council members, Schaub is the town's elected treasurer, and Lucas is a former fire chief. The eventual winner in November will lead the town's government for four years, replacing Ray Harper, who isn't seeking re-election Four candidates also are in the running for the Port Commission, which is the only contest in the primary that involves voters countywide. Incumbent Connie Bacon, who has held office for 16 years, faces challenges from Eric Holdeman, Andre Young and Dave Dormier. Voters who haven't turned in their ballots have until 8 p.m. Aug. 6 to put them in permanent drop boxes the elections department has placed throughout the county. If returned through the mail, ballots must be postmarked by Aug. 6. The locations of drop boxes closest to the south area of the county include: " Barney's Corner, at State Route 161 and Eatonville Cutoff Road. " The public transit park-and-ride lot at the Roy Y area of State Routes 7 and 507. " Pierce County Library System's South Hill branch at 15420 Meridian E. On Tuesday, which technically is election day, the county will open six voting centers where voters can cast ballots from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. One will be at the county maintenance facility in Spanaway at 4812 196th St. E.
