Graham-Kapowsin's Gomez is golden

Joseph Gomez, giving Graham-Kapowsin High School an individual state wrestling champion for the second year in a row, won the 195-pound championship in the 4A division of Mat Classic XV last Saturday at the Tacoma Dome. Gomez beat Tahoma's Matt Hopkins 2-1 in the title match. Ian Steen, a state champion a year ago for Graham-Kapowsin, nearly repeated. He finished second at 145 pounds, losing to Eric Soler GÇô himself a three-time state champ GÇô 3-2 in their finale. Among the 1A schools, Eatonville's top finishers were Wyatt Gustafson, eighth at 220 pounds, and Chase DeMoor, eighth at 285. Gustafson started with a bang, pinning Zach Cully of Goldendale in 38 seconds in their first-round duel. But Gustafson's championship hopes were cut short by loss in his next match. Chase DeMoor was pinned by Kyle Hall of Riverview at the 1 minute mark in their opening-round match, but then won two consolation matches in a row.
