Josehia Hotz was runnerup in an individual event and had a role in one of the four other top-five finishes for Eatonville in the 1A state high school track and field championships last weekend in Cheney. Brailee VandenBoom paced the Cruisers' girls performances with a fourth-place finish individually and the same result as part of a relay team. Hotz, a senior who was competing in his final prep track meet, came within about a half-second of going out with a state title. His time of 50.10 seconds in the 400-meter dash left him in second place behind Riley Olney of Zillah, whose victory in 49.47 seconds helped his team claim the boys' team championship. Hotz followed that effort by running the second leg of Eatonville's third-place 4x100 relay team. He and juniors Ray Springer and Zarak Scruggs and senior Logan Moose, who ran the anchor, combined for a school-record time of 43.52 seconds. Medical Lake won in 42.82 seconds, followed by Port Townsend (43.05). Springer finished third in the long jump at 21 feet 4.5 inches. He was about a foot short of the winning leap of 21-9.5 by Joe Lang of Royal.
